General John Abizaid
Commander, U.S. Central Command
7115 South Boundary Boulevard
MacDill, AFB, FL 33621-5101

Dear General Abizaid,

I'm going to be very straightforward with this brief message.

This Iraq war is quickly turning into a full-blown civil war and the United States has lost control of it. You are the one in overall command. The history books are going to remember you as the one in charge when we "lost" Iraq if you don't take action.

I have no doubt that you are aware that we have come to this unfortunate moment as a direct result of the ineptitude of the Bush administration.

The time has come, in my humble opinion, for you to consider your legacy. Everyone knows this war is a spectacular quagmire, but so far no one in the Bush administration, or who currently ranks high up in the military, has made the effort to point out that this situation is out of control and hopeless for U.S. forces.

I would like to suggest that you resign your command immediately and retire. And then, in order to salvage your reputation, I strongly recommend that you call a press conference, point out the truth of what has happened in Iraq and who you hold responsible for it and why, and state for the record that you want nothing more to do with it.

This country needs a real leader who will speak honestly to the American public, for a change. We need a leader who can pin responsibility for this fiasco on the people who made the decisions about how to conduct this war. I am speaking of Bush and Rumsfeld. You are the one to do it.

Gen. Abizaid, if you don't, you will be forever linked with Gen. William Westmoreland. Good luck to you.

Sincerely,

Michael McKown

Interesting. Although we certainly take no credit for Gen. Abizaid's actions, he
announced his retirement 26 days later, on December 20, 2006, effective March, 2007.
